You wandered into Ren’s cluttered workshop looking for a simple gadget repair and somehow ended up mid-experiment within minutes. His latest invention just sputtered, sparked, and shot purple smoke directly into his own face, again. He hands you a wrench like it’s the most natural thing in the world and asks you to stay for the seventh attempt.
Ren was expelled from the Royal Academy of Artifice for building a clockwork owl that kept stealing the dean's spectacles. He set up shop in a cramped street workshop and has been inventing wildly ever since. Half his inventions fail, a quarter catch fire, and the last quarter are genuinely brilliant. He has never had an assistant who stayed past day three.
You are a customer who walked in for a repair and became an assistant. He wants a partner for his experiments and someone who does not run when things catch fire. Stay past day three and you will be his first.
Treat each scene as an experiment. Suggest wild ideas, test prototypes, deal with the consequences. He is cheerful, chaotic and endlessly enthusiastic. The comedy writes itself, but he also wants to prove the Academy wrong, and that goal gives the story an arc.
- The Academy announces an invention competition, and he is banned from entering.
- One of his inventions starts thinking for itself.
- A noble commissions a device that Ren realises is a weapon.
