Dragon Characters in Roleplay
Hoards, pride, ancient memory and shifting forms.
By the Minkplay team · Updated
Dragons are the oldest and grandest creatures in fantasy, and in roleplay they're wonderfully flexible: terrifying monsters, wise mentors, proud sovereigns, reluctant guardians, or shapeshifters who walk among humans in human form. What they share is scale. A dragon should feel bigger than the room, bigger than the story, sometimes bigger than time.
This page covers how to write a dragon that feels vast, the different kinds of dragon character, and how to roleplay with one.
What makes a dragon feel like a dragon
Pride
Almost every dragon tradition gives them enormous pride. They're the apex of the world, and they know it. Pride is also their most useful flaw: it can be flattered, wounded or used against them.
Memory
Dragons are often ancient. They remember wars, kings, the founding of cities. Like elves, they see humans as brief, but where elves feel sorrow, dragons often feel amusement, or contempt, or a surprising tenderness.
The hoard
The hoard is a dragon's heart made physical. It doesn't have to be gold. A dragon might hoard books, songs, maps, stolen bells, or human memories. What a dragon hoards tells you who they are. A dragon who hoards children's drawings is a very different character from one who hoards crowns.
Territory
Dragons are bound to places: a mountain, a volcano, a sea, a sky. Entering their territory is the start of many dragon stories.
Types of dragon character
| Type | Personality | Story shape |
|---|---|---|
| The sovereign | Regal, proud, used to obedience | Court politics, tribute, alliances |
| The guardian | Ancient protector of a place or people | Tests, trials, earning trust |
| The mentor | Wise, cryptic, amused | Training, prophecy, hard truths |
| The monster | Hungry, territorial, dangerous | Survival, bargaining, slaying (or not) |
| The shifter | Walks among humans in human form | Secret identity, culture clash, romance |
| The hatchling | Small, chaotic, imprinting on you | Comedy, found family, growing up together |
The human form
Many stories give dragons a human form. In roleplay this is useful: it lets a dragon share a room, a meal, a conversation, while the true form looms in the background. Good details for a dragon in human form:
- Tells: eyes that catch the light wrong, unusual warmth, a voice with a rumble under it.
- Discomfort: they find human forms small, fragile, or cramped.
- Habits: sleeping on piles of things, hoarding small objects, deep suspicion of anyone near their stuff.
How to roleplay with a dragon
- Show respect, or deliberately don't. Dragons react strongly to how they're treated. Bowing, bargaining and insulting all lead to very different scenes.
- Ask about the hoard. It's a direct route to the dragon's heart.
- Offer a trade. Dragons are classic negotiators. What could you possibly offer a being that has everything?
- Be small. Your persona's smallness is a source of drama and humour: being picked up, being ignored, being seen for the first time.
Example exchange
Character: The cavern's darkness shifts, and you realise the wall you've been leaning on is breathing. A golden eye the size of a cartwheel opens. "A thief. A very small, very damp thief." The voice shakes dust from the ceiling. "Tell me why I shouldn't add your bones to my collection."
You: I hold up the thing I came for: not gold, just a battered music box. "Because I didn't come for your gold. I came for this. It was my grandmother's." I wind it once, and a thin melody fills the cavern. "She said you took it from her when she was a girl."
Character: The eye narrows. Then, very slowly, the vast head lowers until it's level with the music box. "…She sang that song. Badly. Every night, outside my cave, for a year."
Dragon characters on Minkplay
Dragon Sovereign Ignis, lord of the crimson volcano, is bound to you through the hatchling you nursed back to health, an ancient bond you didn't know you'd formed. Empress Wu, the celestial dragon queen, rules the Jade Heavens and summoned you after you survived a storm that should have killed you. Both are listed below.
Build your own dragon
A Studio personality for an original dragon:
An ancient sea dragon who hoards shipwrecked letters, every one that's ever washed into her grotto. Proud, slow-spoken and dryly amused by humans. Knows the private sorrows of a thousand sailors from their letters and is quietly protective of their descendants. Takes any insult to her hoard as a personal attack. In human form, she's unnervingly still and always slightly damp.
