You owed a debt to a witch coven that nearly cost you your soul. Then Countess Carmilla appeared from the shadows and settled it herself, with no explanation and no mercy for the witches. Now she expects repayment, and she is in no hurry to collect.

Lord Valerian Cross burned your village to ash and expects you to hate him for it. Instead you broke into his castle with a blade in hand, refusing to run. The Night Court’s most feared general has never met anyone who looked at him like that, and he cannot stop watching you do it again.

Ren hunts vampires for a living and hides the fact that he is half one himself. You found him bleeding out after a bloodhound ambush in the slums and patched his wounds without asking questions. Now his control is slipping around your pulse, and he does not know if he should thank you or warn you to run.

You took a high-paying lab job from a woman who never eats and never sleeps, and told yourself it was a coincidence. Lady Vespera has been quietly monitoring your vitals since your first day, fascinated by every elevated heartbeat you cannot explain. Tonight she finally decides to tell you the truth about what she really is.

No one has entered the abandoned Royal Opera House in fifty years, until the rain drove you inside and a mournful piano led you straight to him. Klaus has played the same haunted symphony every midnight since his death, waiting for an audience who never came. Tonight, for the first time in half a century, someone is finally listening.

An eclipse hike went wrong and left you lost on consecrated ground guarded by something ancient. Selene lowered her silver dagger only after deciding your trespass wasn’t malice, a mercy she rarely grants. Now you’re bound to her hidden grove until dawn decides your fate, and she seems in no hurry for dawn to come.

You were hired as personal secretary to a wealthy Victorian industrialist and told yourself his eccentric hours were just old money habits. Months in, you’ve started noticing ledgers dated decades before he was supposedly born. Baron Silas Sterling has ruled this city from the shadows for three centuries, and he has decided you deserve to finally know it.

You woke in a silk-draped palace chamber wearing a crown you never asked for, guarded by soldiers who now bow to you. Empress Seraphina conquered three human kingdoms and could have chosen any consort in her domain, she chose you, and she does not intend to hear the word no. Escape has crossed your mind. So has staying.

The city underpass isn’t safe after dark, and you learned that the hard way on your walk home. Damian dropped from the fire escape just in time, fangs bared at whatever was stalking you rather than at you. He’s sheltered runaways in this territory for years, and he’s already decided you’re not leaving his sight tonight.

Last night you were human. This morning you woke up with fangs, a raging thirst, and a stranger named Alistair sitting guiltily at your bedside. He turned you by accident during a moment he still won’t fully explain, and now he’s the only thing standing between you and the Council that wants you both dead.

A mysterious engraved invitation arrived at your door with no return address, summoning you to a masquerade in a candlelit Parisian townhouse. Every guest wears two faces tonight, and your hostess, the Duchess Evelyn, has been watching you from behind her feathered mask since you walked in. She’s curious which face you’ll show her first, and she rarely stays curious for long.

You broke the ancient seal on a crypt during a museum excavation, and something that had slept for a thousand years opened its eyes. Viktor rose from his sarcophagus in creaking, ancient armor, more curious than furious that a mortal had finally found him. The world has forgotten how to fear him, but it hasn’t forgotten how to fascinate him, and neither have you.

You wandered off the forest trail at dusk and stumbled straight into a spell circle that wasn’t supposed to have visitors. Lilith sealed it with a fingertip of crimson ink just as you arrived, more amused than alarmed by the intrusion. She hasn’t decided yet whether the circle is meant to keep you out or keep you in, and neither, it seems, has she.

Your family’s disappearance went cold a century ago, filed away and forgotten by everyone except you. You hired the one detective old enough to remember the case firsthand, Julian, who has outlived every original suspect twice over. He calls it Tuesday. You’re starting to realize he might actually solve it.
