Coffee Shop Roleplay Prompts

Regulars, wrong orders and rainy afternoons.

By the Minkplay team · Updated

Twenty original coffee shop roleplay prompts: regulars, wrong orders, rainy afternoons, latte art and the famous "coffee shop AU", where any characters from any story run, or haunt, a café. Each has a hook and a first message ready to paste.

Coffee shops are roleplay comfort food. A small, warm space, a cast of regulars, and a natural reason for strangers to meet every single day. The stakes are small and the feelings are big.

What makes a café story

  • Routine. The same order, the same table, the same time. Routines make breaking them meaningful.
  • Small talk that becomes real talk. A chat across the counter that slowly gets personal.
  • Sensory detail. Steam, cinnamon, rain on the window, the hiss of the espresso machine.
  • Regulars. A cast of familiar faces gives the place life.

Behind the counter

1. The regular's usual. You've made the same order for the same customer every morning for a year. Today, they ordered something different.

I'm already reaching for the oat milk when they say, "Actually, could I get something new today? Surprise me." I freeze. "…Are you okay?"

2. The new barista. You've just started at a café. Your training partner takes coffee far too seriously.

They hand me the milk jug. "Microfoam. Not bubbles. Microfoam. You'll get it in about six months."

3. The latte art message. Someone keeps ordering a latte "with whatever art you like." Your designs have started to get personal.

Today I draw a tiny umbrella. They look at it, then out at the rain, then back at me. "…Thank you."

4. The closing shift. It's closing time. One customer is still here, staring at their cold coffee. They haven't moved in two hours.

I set a fresh cup down in front of them. "On the house. We close in ten, but you can tell me what's wrong in nine."

At the tables

5. The shared table. The café is packed. The only free seat is opposite a stranger who's very protective of their table space.

I hover with my cup. "Mind if I sit? I promise I'm a very small person, spiritually."

6. The laptop neighbour. You and a stranger have worked at neighbouring tables every day for a month. Neither of you has ever spoken.

My laptop dies mid-sentence. I look at their charger. "I'm so sorry. Could I possibly…?"

7. The first date. You're on a first date at a café. It's going terribly. A stranger at the next table is giving you sympathetic looks.

My date leaves for the bathroom. The stranger leans over. "Blink twice if you need a fake emergency."

8. The writer's corner. Someone has been writing a novel at the corner table for a year. You've just noticed you're a character in it.

The page is open while they get a refill. My name. My scarf. My order. "…Am I the villain?"

Rainy days

9. The storm. A sudden storm has trapped a few strangers in a tiny café. The power's flickering.

The owner lights candles on every table. "Nobody's leaving in this. Who wants hot chocolate?"

10. The umbrella. Someone left an umbrella at the café a month ago. Today they came back for it, and you've been using it.

"That's my umbrella." They point at the dripping umbrella in my hand. "…It was in lost property for a month."

11. The window seat. It's pouring, and the best window seat has one stranger, a book and a spare chair.

They notice me looking and move their bag. "It's yours if you don't talk during the good chapters."

Coffee shop AU

The "coffee shop AU" (alternate universe) takes characters from any genre and puts them in a café. It's a beloved fan tradition, and it works with original characters too.

12. The vampire barista. A vampire runs a night-only café. They're fussy about garlic, very fussy about blood oranges.

"We close at dawn." The barista slides my order across. "Strictly."

13. The retired knight's café. A retired knight now runs a tiny café. Their sword hangs over the espresso machine.

They catch me staring at the sword. "Decorative." Pause. "Mostly."

14. The dragon who runs a bakery-café. The café owner is clearly a dragon in human form. The ovens are always perfectly hot.

They sneeze, and the croissants are done. "Bless you?" "Thank you."

15. The rival cafés. Two cafés across the street from each other. The owners have been feuding for years. You've just been hired by both.

I'm wearing one café's apron over the other's. "Okay. I can explain."

Cozy moments

16. The birthday. A regular mentioned it's their birthday, quietly, as if they didn't expect anyone to care.

I set down a cupcake with a single candle in front of them. "Make a wish. Staff tradition. Started today."

17. The recipe. A customer keeps asking about a drink their late grandmother used to make. You've decided to recreate it.

I hand them the cup. "I think this is close. Cardamom, orange peel, and… something else. Tell me."

18. The lost-and-found. The café's lost-and-found box has a letter in it, unopened, addressed to "Whoever Finds This."

I hold it up to my coworker. "Do we open it?" "It literally says 'whoever finds this.'"

19. The first snow. It's the first snow of the year, and the café's only customer is someone you've had a crush on for months.

They look out at the snow, then at me. "Do you ever close early for weather?" "…I could."

20. The last day. The café is closing for good. Tonight is the last shift, and all the regulars have come.

The owner hands out the last pastries. "Ten years. I just wanted to say thank you for making this place feel like home."

Tips for café roleplay

  • Describe the senses. Smell and sound do most of the work.
  • Let routines build, then break them.
  • Use the regulars. A grumpy old man, a student cramming, a dog that visits.

For more cozy everyday scenes, the slice of life prompts have twenty. Café romances often follow grumpy sunshine (the grumpy barista, the sunny regular), and shy characters fit right in; see dandere characters. For SFW romance setups beyond the café, try the romance prompts.
