Royal Court Roleplay Prompts
Succession crises, poisoned feasts and secret alliances.
By the Minkplay team · Updated
Twenty original royal court roleplay prompts: succession crises, poisoned feasts, secret alliances, masked balls and the quiet romance of glances across a throne room. Each has a hook and a first message ready to paste. All kingdoms, houses and royals here are invented.
A royal court is a pressure cooker: power, etiquette, family and ambition all in one building. Every conversation has an audience, every gesture has a meaning, and one wrong word can start a war.
Know your court
Before you start, sketch three things:
- Who rules, and how securely? An old king, a child queen, a regent, a contested throne.
- Who wants power? Rival houses, ambitious siblings, a scheming chancellor.
- What's your persona's place? Royal, noble, servant, foreigner, guard, prisoner?
Your position decides what you can say, where you can go, and who's watching.
Succession and power
1. The king's last words. The king has died. You're the only person who heard his final words, and they name a different heir than everyone expects.
The chancellor grips my arm in the corridor. "You were with him at the end. What did he say?" I look at the crown prince across the hall. "…Not his name."
2. The regent's bargain. You're regent for a child queen. A powerful duke offers his army's loyalty, for a price.
The duke sets a contract on the council table. "My army, for her hand in marriage when she comes of age." "She's nine." "I'm patient."
3. The bastard heir. A letter has proved you're the king's illegitimate child. Half the court wants you crowned. The other half wants you gone.
I hold the letter in front of the assembled lords. "I didn't ask for this. But I'm not going to pretend it isn't true."
4. The exiled prince returns. Ten years after his exile, the prince has come home with an army. You were his closest friend, and you swore loyalty to his brother.
He stops his horse at the city gates and looks straight at me on the wall. "Open the gates, old friend. Or tell me you've forgotten me."
Intrigue and danger
5. The food taster. You're the royal food taster. Tonight's wine tastes wrong, and you're the only one who's noticed.
I set the goblet down very carefully. "Your Majesty. Please don't drink from your cup."
6. The spy among the handmaids. One of the queen's handmaids is a spy. You've narrowed it down to two, and one is your closest friend.
I corner my friend in the linen room. "The letter in your sewing box. Tell me who it's for."
7. The poisoned feast. A lord collapsed at the banquet. The doors are sealed. Everyone in the hall is a suspect.
The captain of the guard locks the hall doors. "Nobody leaves until we know who did this." I look at the empty seat beside me. "Then you should know he swapped plates with me."
8. The treaty forger. You're the court scribe. You've been ordered to alter a treaty before it's signed.
The chancellor slides the treaty across my desk. "One word. 'Shall' becomes 'may.' Nobody will notice." "Everyone will notice. Eventually."
Romance at court
9. The queen's champion. You've won the tournament and become the queen's sworn champion. She's been watching you a little too long.
She hands me the champion's ribbon, and her fingers stay on mine a moment too long. "Well fought. Try not to get yourself killed. I'd hate to look for another."
10. The foreign princess. A princess from a rival kingdom has arrived to sign a peace treaty. You've been assigned as her translator.
"She says the palace is cold." I hesitate. "She also says your king has the manners of a goat. Should I translate that part?"
11. The masquerade. At the royal masquerade, a masked stranger knows far too much about you.
The stranger bows. "You hate dancing. You'd rather be in the library. And you've been looking for the exit for an hour."
12. The prince's tutor. You've been hired to tutor the crown prince. He's brilliant, bored and determined to get you dismissed.
A frog is sitting on my lesson plan. "Your Highness. Is this a test?" "It's a frog."
Life below stairs
13. The kitchen maid's secret. The palace's best cook is secretly a disgraced noble. You've just recognised them.
I set down the onions and lower my voice. "Lady Ashcombe? I served at your father's house. Everyone thinks you're dead."
14. The stable hand and the princess. The princess sneaks to the stables every night to ride alone. You're the stable hand who's supposed to report it.
"You're going to tell my mother." She's already saddling the horse. "I'm going to saddle the grey. She's calmer in the dark."
15. The royal gardener. You tend the palace gardens. The king has started visiting at dawn to talk to you, and only you.
He sits on the bench beside the roses. "You're the only person in this palace who doesn't want anything from me. Tell me about the tulips."
16. The palace thief. The crown jewels are missing. Everyone suspects you, the new servant. You know who really took them.
The captain of the guard grabs my collar. "Where are they?" "Ask the prince why he was in the vault at midnight."
Grand moments
17. The coronation. It's the morning of the coronation, and the new queen is hiding in the chapel.
I find her kneeling at the altar, crown beside her. "They're waiting, Your Majesty." "Then they can wait one more minute."
18. The siege. The capital is under siege. The king has fled. You're the highest-ranking person left in the palace.
Every face in the throne room turns to me. "Right. Who knows how many days of grain we have?"
19. The abdication. The king has decided to abdicate, for love. You're his advisor, and you have one night to change his mind.
I pour two glasses of wine. "Tell me about her. And then tell me what happens to the kingdom."
20. The reunion. The lost princess, presumed dead for fifteen years, has returned. You were her childhood friend. You need to know if it's really her.
I hold up the wooden horse I carved for her when we were seven. "Do you remember what you named him?"
Playing court intrigue
- Everyone wants something. Decide what each character's ambition is.
- Etiquette is a weapon. Who bows first, who sits where, who speaks first.
- Secrets are currency. Trade them carefully.
