Vampire Roleplay Prompts

20 original gothic, modern and courtly starters, each with a first message.

By the Minkplay team · Updated

Twenty original vampire roleplay prompts, sorted by mood: gothic, modern, courtly, hunter, and lighter stories. Each has a one-line hook and a first message you can paste straight into a chat. Swap names, genders and details to fit your character.

How to use these prompts

  • Pick a mood first. Gothic stories run on atmosphere and slow menace, modern ones on secrecy, court stories on politics, and hunter stories on action and trust.
  • Paste the first message, then make it yours. Change one detail, like a name, an object or a place, and the scene immediately feels like your story.
  • Decide what your character wants before you send. "Survive the night" and "get the ledger back" lead to very different scenes.

Gothic: castles, curses and candlelight

1. The portrait that ages. Every portrait in the manor shows the lord of the house, and in each one, painted a century apart, he looks exactly the same. Except the newest, which shows him older.

I hold the lamp up to the newest painting, then turn to him. "This one is different. You look… tired. When was it painted?"

2. The governess and the locked wing. You took a governess job at a remote estate. The child you're teaching has been eight years old for a very long time.

"She told me today that she remembers the old king's coronation." I set down the chalk. "Sir, the old king was crowned in 1702."

3. The debt at the crossroads. Your grandfather made a bargain at a crossroads. He's dead. The vampire who holds the contract has come to collect from the next of kin.

The stranger at my door holds up a yellowed contract with my grandfather's signature on it. "I'm afraid he never mentioned you. What exactly did he owe?"

4. The bell that rings at midnight. The village church bell rings at midnight every night, though the tower has been locked for fifty years. You're the new vicar, and you have the only key.

I reach the top of the tower stairs, out of breath, as the last chime fades. Someone is sitting beside the bell rope. "This tower has been locked since before I was born. How did you get in?"

Modern: secrets in the city

5. The night-shift nurse. You keep noticing the same pale patient checking himself out of the ER before anyone can take his bloodwork.

I catch him at the ambulance bay doors, still wearing the hospital wristband. "Third time this month. You know you can't keep leaving before we run tests, right?"

6. The landlord who only does night viewings. The apartment is perfect and absurdly cheap. The landlord only shows it after sunset and asks unusually specific questions about your schedule.

"It's lovely. Really. I just have one question." I nod at the windows. "Why are all the curtains blackout-lined, even in the bathroom?"

7. The podcast. You host a true-crime podcast about a string of unsolved disappearances. A listener emails: stop digging, or let me tell you the real story in person.

I set the recorder on the café table between us. "You said you knew what happened in 1987. You look about twenty-five."

8. The blood bank break-in. Someone's been raiding the blood bank where you work the night desk. Tonight you're waiting for them.

The cooler door opens and I flick on the lights. "Put the O-negative down. Slowly. And then you're going to explain why you're paying for it."

Courtly: politics among immortals

9. The mortal ambassador. The human kingdom sends you as its ambassador to the vampire court. Your predecessor didn't come back.

I bow, exactly as deep as protocol requires and not an inch further. "Your Majesty. I come with the kingdom's renewed terms. And a question about my predecessor."

10. The heir nobody wanted. The ancient head of a vampire house has named a human as heir, and the rest of the family is not pleased.

Eleven pairs of eyes turn to me as the will is read. "I didn't ask for this. I didn't even know him." I look at the eldest. "So which of you wants to tell me why he chose me?"

11. The masquerade with no reflections. At a masked ball, you notice the mirrored ballroom shows only half the guests.

I lean in close to my dance partner and keep smiling. "Don't look, but the mirror behind you shows me dancing alone."

12. The tutor to the prince. You've been hired to teach modern history to a vampire prince who slept through the last three centuries.

"Lesson one." I set a smartphone on the polished desk. "This is a telephone. No, you can't challenge it to a duel."

Hunters: trust under fire

13. The partner who won't eat. Your new hunting partner is brilliant, fast, and never eats in front of you.

I push a plate of food across the safehouse table. "You've had nothing for three days. Either eat or tell me what you are."

14. The hunter's sister. You're a vampire hunter. Your missing sister has been found, turned, and living under the protection of the vampire you've been hunting.

I lower my crossbow an inch. "She says you saved her. She says she chose this." My voice cracks. "Tell me she's lying."

15. Last two survivors. A hunter and a vampire are the only survivors of an ambush by something worse than either of them.

I tighten the tourniquet on my leg and look at him across the burning chapel. "Truce until sunrise. After that, I'm going to kill you." "Agreed. If we live that long."

16. The order's secret. You discover the hunters' order you belong to was founded by a vampire.

I slam the founder's journal onto the grandmaster's desk. "The handwriting matches the one in the crypt. Our founder was one of them. How long have you known?"

Lighter stories: cozy and comedic

17. The vampire who can't cook. Your vampire roommate wants to throw a dinner party for his human friends. He hasn't eaten food in four hundred years.

Smoke pours out of the oven. "You were supposed to roast the chicken, not exorcise it."

18. The night-owl bookshop. You open a 24-hour bookshop. One customer only ever comes in between 2 and 4am, and always buys poetry.

I ring up his usual stack. "Byron again. You know, you could just tell me you met him."

19. Vampire etiquette class. You're a newly turned vampire and the only teacher available is a fussy two-hundred-year-old aristocrat.

"So I can't eat garlic, can't go in the sun, can't enter without an invitation…" I count on my fingers. "Is there anything I can do?"

20. The terrible stake salesman. You sell "vampire defence kits" as a joke novelty product. A very real vampire shows up wanting a refund.

He sets the plastic stake on the counter. "It says 'guaranteed effective'. I'd like to discuss your returns policy."

Make these prompts work harder

  • Keep the rules of your vampires consistent. Can they enter uninvited? Do they reflect? Decide early and stick to it; broken rules break tension.
  • Let the vampire be old. Centuries of memory are the best story fuel you have. Ask what they've seen, who they've lost, what they regret.
  • Hunger is a tension tool, not a plot. It works best as something held back. Restraint is more interesting than appetite, and it keeps things comfortably safe-for-work.

Prefer a ready-made character?

Every vampire character on Minkplay already comes with a scenario in motion. Countess Carmilla has you trapped in her manor during a blizzard, Klaus finds you sheltering from the rain in an abandoned opera house, and Julian is a vampire detective you've hired to reopen a century-old disappearance. Or build your own vampire using one of the prompts above as the scenario.

For a vampire story built on rivalry, see the enemies to lovers guide, which has more starters and explains how to pace that arc.
