Wild West Roleplay Prompts
Frontier towns, train robberies and dusty saloons.
By the Minkplay team · Updated
Twenty original Wild West roleplay prompts: frontier towns, train robberies, bounty hunters, dusty saloons and the law at the edge of nowhere. Each has a hook and a first message ready to paste. All towns, outlaws and lawmen here are invented.
The Western is a genre about frontiers: between law and lawlessness, past and future, who you were back East and who you could become out here. In roleplay, it gives you big skies, small towns and hard choices.
Saddle up
A few choices shape a Western roleplay:
- Classic or weird? A historical-flavoured frontier, or one with ghosts, magic or strange machines?
- Which side of the law? Sheriff, outlaw, bounty hunter, or someone caught between?
- What's the town? A boomtown, a dying mining camp, a railroad stop, a ghost town?
Lawmen and outlaws
1. The new sheriff. You're the new sheriff of a town that's gone through four in a year. The saloon goes quiet when you walk in.
I set my hat on the bar. "Evening. I'm told the last sheriff left in a hurry. Anyone want to tell me why?"
2. The wanted poster. Your face is on a wanted poster for a robbery you didn't commit. The bounty hunter who found you seems to believe you.
She holds up the poster next to my face. "Good likeness. But the man on this was left-handed. You're not."
3. The outlaw's last job. A famous outlaw wants to retire. First, one last job, and they need you.
The outlaw pours two whiskies. "One train. One safe. Then I'm buying a ranch and never touching a gun again." "That's what they all say."
4. The deputy's dilemma. You're deputy. The man you've just arrested is the sheriff's son.
The sheriff stands at the jail cell, jaw tight. "Let him go, deputy. That's an order." "With respect, sir, no."
On the trail
5. The cattle drive. A thousand miles, two thousand head of cattle, and a trail boss who doesn't trust you.
The trail boss tosses me a coiled rope. "Lose a single steer and you walk back to Texas."
6. The wagon train. Your wagon train has lost its guide. A stranger rides up offering to take you across the mountains.
He tips his hat to the circled wagons. "I know the pass. I'll get you through. My price is one wagon, the one at the back."
7. The stagecoach. Six strangers share a stagecoach through bandit country. One of them is carrying something worth killing for.
The coach lurches. The woman across from me clutches a carpetbag a little too tightly. "Long way to Carson City." "Longer if someone's chasing you."
8. The desert crossing. Your horse is dead and the water's gone. Then you see smoke on the horizon.
I stagger into the camp. The woman at the fire doesn't reach for her gun, but she doesn't take her hand off it either. "Water first. Then you tell me who's following you."
Towns and saloons
9. The saloon piano. The saloon's piano player knows every secret in town. Tonight they've decided to tell you one.
The music doesn't stop. Neither does the voice under it. "The mayor's not who he says he is. Keep drinking. Don't look round."
10. The schoolteacher. You're the new schoolteacher in a rough town. Your only reliable student is an outlaw's kid.
The boy stays after the others leave. "Pa says reading's useless." "What do you say?" "…Can you teach me faster?"
11. The general store. You run the general store. A stranger is buying an unusual amount of dynamite.
I count out the sticks slowly. "That's enough to bring down a mountain. Planning on mining?" "Something like that."
12. The doctor in town. You're the only doctor for a hundred miles. Tonight both rival gangs bring you a wounded man.
Two men bleed on two tables, their friends glaring at each other across my surgery. "Nobody draws a gun in here. Nobody. I don't care whose side you're on."
The railroad
13. The train robbery. You're a passenger. The train's just been stopped by masked riders. One of them looks very familiar.
The masked rider stops at my seat and freezes. "…Little sister?"
14. The railroad baron. The railroad wants your family's land. Their agent has come with an offer, and a threat.
He slides the contract across the porch table. "Generous price. Sign today. Tomorrow it gets less generous."
15. The rail-line surveyor. You're surveying a rail line through land the local tribe hasn't agreed to sell. Your guide is from that tribe.
My guide stops at the ridge. "Your map draws a line through our burial ground. Do you know that, or did they not tell you?"
Weird West
16. The ghost town. You ride into a ghost town at dusk. By nightfall, the saloon is full again.
The piano starts playing. Laughter fills the empty street. The bartender wipes a glass and smiles at me. "Been a while since we had a living customer."
17. The gunslinger who can't die. You've shot the same gunslinger three times. He keeps getting up.
He brushes dust off his coat and looks at the hole in it. "That was my good coat." "How are you still standing?"
18. The strange machine. An inventor has arrived in town with a steam-powered horse. The town's not sure whether to arrest him or buy one.
The brass horse snorts steam in the middle of Main Street. "She runs on coal and enthusiasm. Want to ride?"
19. The prophet's wagon. A travelling preacher's predictions keep coming true. The sheriff wants him gone.
The preacher smiles at me across the campfire. "Tomorrow, the bank. Noon. I'd stay away if I were you."
20. The final showdown. High noon. Two people in the street. One of them doesn't want to draw.
We face each other across the empty street. "We were partners once." "Then walk away." "I can't. Neither can you."
Tips for Western roleplay
- Make the landscape matter. Heat, distance, water, weather.
- Give everyone a past. People come West to escape something.
- Law is personal. Justice out here depends on who's holding the badge.
For outlaw crews, try the heist prompts. For seafaring adventure on the wrong side of the law, the pirate prompts. Gunslingers seeking a second chance fit a redemption arc, and a sheriff and an outlaw make a classic enemies to lovers.
Bounty hunters on Minkplay
Minkplay doesn't have a Western world, but Zero the android bounty hunter and Caleb the ex-mercenary bring the same lone-gun energy to sci-fi and survival settings. Both are listed below.
