Tavern Roleplay Prompts
Strangers, quest boards and a barkeep who knows too much.
By the Minkplay team · Updated
Twenty original tavern roleplay prompts for fantasy stories: strangers in shadowed corners, quest boards, bar fights, mysterious patrons and a barkeep who knows far too much. Each has a hook and a first message ready to paste. All taverns, towns and characters here are invented.
"You meet in a tavern" is fantasy's most famous opening line, and for good reason. A tavern gathers people who'd never otherwise meet, gives them drink, warmth and loose tongues, and sends them out into the world with a reason to go.
Build your tavern
Give your tavern three things:
- A name and a sign. The Drowned Lantern. The Crooked Crown. The Last Ember.
- A barkeep with a personality. Gruff, gossipy, retired adventurer, secretly royalty.
- One odd detail. A sword above the hearth no one can lift. A cat that only sits with liars. A table nobody sits at.
Strangers and quests
1. The quest board. The tavern's quest board has one notice left. It's addressed to you, by name, in your own handwriting.
I pull the parchment off the board and turn to the barkeep. "Who pinned this up?" "Nobody. It's been there since this morning."
2. The hooded stranger. A hooded figure in the corner has been watching you all night. Finally, they wave you over.
They push a stool out with one boot. "Sit. You're the only one in here who isn't drunk, armed or a spy. I need someone like that."
3. The map on the napkin. An old adventurer, deep in his cups, has just drawn a map on a napkin and fallen asleep.
I smooth out the napkin. Under the ale stain: a mountain, a cave, and the words "the sixth door."
4. The job nobody wants. The local lord's notice offers a fortune to clear a haunted mill. Everyone in the tavern is pretending not to see it.
I tap the notice. "Fifty gold. Nobody?" The whole tavern goes quiet. "…What do you all know that I don't?"
Trouble in the tavern
5. The bar fight. A brawl has broken out. You've just ducked behind the bar, and so has a very calm elf.
She sips her wine as a chair sails overhead. "Happens every Thursday. Wait for the dwarf to throw the table, then we make for the door."
6. The wrong drink. You picked up the wrong mug. Now you can hear people's thoughts.
Every voice in the tavern is suddenly in my head. The barkeep is thinking about poison. "Excuse me. What was in this mug?"
7. The card game. A card game in the back room has very high stakes. Your opponent is cheating, with magic.
I lay my cards down slowly. "That's a lovely ring. Does it always glow when you're dealt a good hand?"
8. The debt collector. Someone from your past has walked into the tavern. You owe them a great deal.
She sits down across from me and takes my drink. "Five years. I've been very patient. Let's talk about interest."
The barkeep
9. The barkeep who used to adventure. The barkeep has a scarred hand and a famous sword above the hearth. They don't talk about the old days, until tonight.
"You want to know about the sword?" The barkeep sets down the glass. "Fine. But you buy the whole story, not just the good parts."
10. The barkeep's daughter. The barkeep has asked you to keep an eye on their daughter, who keeps trying to run off to become an adventurer.
I catch her climbing out of the window with a pack. "Your father will kill me." "Then come with me. It'll be fine."
11. The cellar. The barkeep asks you to fetch a keg from the cellar. Something down there is drinking the ale.
I hold up the lantern. A small, very drunk dragon hiccups at me from behind the barrels.
12. The last round. It's the tavern's last night before it's torn down. The regulars are gathered for one final round.
The barkeep raises a mug. "Forty years. To everyone who drank here, and everyone who never came back."
Mysterious patrons
13. The bard's song. A travelling bard is singing a ballad about events that haven't happened yet.
The bard finishes the verse about a burning bridge and catches my eye. "You'll want to stay off the north road tomorrow."
14. The prince in disguise. The scruffy traveller paying in copper has a signet ring on a chain around their neck.
I lean in. "You might want to tuck that ring in. Half this room would sell you to the crown for a meal."
15. The ghost regular. Every night at the same table, the same old soldier orders the same drink, and he's been dead for twenty years.
I sit down across from him. "They tell me you died in the war." He shrugs. "I'm still waiting for my mate to buy his round."
16. The witch's order. A witch orders a drink that isn't on the menu and asks you, the new server, to make it.
"Three drops of moonlight, a twist of regret, and something warm." She smiles. "Improvise."
Quiet nights
17. The storm. A storm has trapped a handful of travellers in the tavern for the night. Everyone has a story.
The barkeep throws another log on the fire. "Nobody's going anywhere tonight. So. Who wants to start?"
18. The lonely knight. A knight in battered armour drinks alone every night and leaves before dawn.
I set a bowl of stew in front of him. "On the house. You look like you've been fighting something nobody else can see."
19. The tavern cat. The tavern cat has chosen your lap. The regulars say it only does that for people with a destiny.
The cat curls up and purrs. The whole bar goes quiet. "…Is that bad?"
20. The return. Years ago you left this tavern to seek your fortune. Tonight you've come back, older, with nothing.
The barkeep looks up, then pours my old drink without a word. "Took you long enough."
Tavern tips
- Use the crowd. Background characters (the drunk, the gossip, the guard off duty) bring the room to life.
- Every patron has a story. Pick one and pull the thread.
- Taverns are beginnings. Most of these should end with someone walking out into the night with a reason.
For quests beyond the tavern, see the fantasy roleplay prompts. For a game-like experience, run a solo RPG or text adventure that starts at the bar. For fantasy patrons, read about elves and knights.
