Workplace Roleplay Prompts

Deadlines, office rivals and late nights: 20 starters.

By the Minkplay team · Updated

Twenty original workplace roleplay prompts: deadlines, office rivals, late nights, team disasters and the new hire who changes everything. Each has a hook and a first message ready to paste. All companies and people here are invented.

Workplaces are great roleplay settings because everyone has a role, a boss, a reputation and something to lose. The stakes are personal: a promotion, a project, a friendship, a secret in the break room.

Pick your workplace

  • Corporate office: meetings, politics, the corner office.
  • Startup: chaos, ambition, beanbags, no budget.
  • Hospital, restaurant, newsroom: high pressure, long shifts.
  • Small business: a bookshop, a florist, a family firm.
  • Unusual job: museum night guard, zookeeper, lighthouse technician.

Office life

1. The new hire. It's your first day. Your desk is next to the office legend, who clearly doesn't want a neighbour.

I set my plant on the desk. "Hi. I'm new. I'm told you know where the good stapler is." They don't look up. "There is no good stapler."

2. The reply-all. You accidentally replied-all to the entire company with a very honest opinion of the quarterly plan. The CEO wants to see you.

I hover in the doorway of the CEO's office. "Before you say anything, I'd like to say I stand by about sixty percent of that email."

3. The office plant. Someone in the office has been secretly watering your dying plant every night. You've stayed late to find out who.

Footsteps at 9pm. I peek over my monitor. It's the person I'd least expect, holding a tiny watering can.

4. The printer war. Two departments, one printer, a deadline in an hour.

We both reach for the printer tray at the same moment. "Mine's a client contract." "Mine's the board deck."

Deadlines and disasters

5. The all-nighter. The big presentation is at 9am. The file just got corrupted. It's 11pm, and only you and one coworker are left.

I stare at the error message. "Please tell me you have a backup." My coworker slowly takes off their glasses. "I am the backup."

6. The client from hell. You've been assigned the company's most difficult client. Your predecessor quit in tears.

The client sweeps into the meeting room, already talking. "I've rejected eleven proposals. Impress me."

7. The product launch. Launch day. Everything that can go wrong is going wrong, and the press is downstairs.

The demo screen goes blue in front of forty journalists. "That's… part of the experience. Give us two minutes."

8. The audit. The auditors arrive tomorrow. You've just found a mistake in the accounts. A big one.

I close my boss's office door. "Do you have a minute? Actually, do you have the rest of the night?"

Rivals and allies

9. The promotion. You and your work rival are both up for the same promotion. The boss has assigned you a joint project to "see how you work together."

"Let's set ground rules." I slide a notepad across the table. "One: no stealing credit." "That's rich, coming from you."

10. The mentor. A senior colleague you idolise has taken you under their wing, and you've just discovered they're about to be fired.

I find them packing their desk early. "You knew. You've known for a week. Why didn't you say?"

11. The office gossip. The office gossip has heard something about you. Something true.

They lean over the partition, smiling. "So. Is it true what they're saying about you and the accounts department?"

12. The whistleblower. You've found evidence your company is doing something seriously wrong. Your only ally is a coworker you barely know.

I lower my voice in the stairwell. "If I'm right about this, we both lose our jobs. If I'm wrong, I lose mine. Are you in?"

Unusual workplaces

13. The museum night shift. You're the night guard at a natural history museum. Your new colleague insists the exhibits move.

They point at the dinosaur skeleton. "It was facing the other way an hour ago. I'm not crazy."

14. The radio station. You produce the 3am show at a small radio station. The host has just gone off-script on air.

They push the mic aside during the music break. "I'm going to say something on air tonight that'll get us both fired. You can stop me now."

15. The zoo. You're a new zookeeper. The senior keeper has given you the "difficult" animal.

The keeper hands me a bucket. "His name's Bartholomew. He's a goat. He's been fired from two petting zoos."

16. The wedding venue. You coordinate weddings. Today's couple has cancelled. The guests are still arriving.

I grab the best man by the elbow. "Help me stall. Make a speech. About anything."

After hours

17. The office party. It's the end-of-year party, and the boss has just announced layoffs, by accident, mid-toast.

The room goes silent. I lean over to my coworker. "Did he… did he just say that out loud?"

18. The lift. You're stuck in the office lift with the CEO, who you've never spoken to.

The lights flicker. "So." The CEO loosens their tie. "What department are you in?"

19. The late-night snack. Every night at 10pm, someone steals your snack from the office fridge. Tonight you're waiting.

The fridge opens. The thief freezes, holding my yoghurt. "…Okay, I can explain."

20. The resignation. You've decided to quit. You have to tell your boss, who's also your closest friend at work.

I set the envelope on their desk. "Before you open that. I want you to know you're the reason I stayed this long."

Workplace roleplay tips

  • Use the hierarchy. Bosses, interns and peers all talk differently.
  • Small stakes feel big. A stolen idea, a missed deadline, a misread email.
  • Workplaces are ensembles. Name a few coworkers to bring the office to life.
