College Roleplay Prompts

Roommates, study groups, all-nighters and campus secrets.

By the Minkplay team · Updated

Twenty original college roleplay prompts: roommates, study groups, all-nighters, campus traditions and the strange freedom of being an adult for the first time. Each has a hook and a first message ready to paste. All universities and people here are invented.

College stories hit a sweet spot for roleplay: characters are old enough for real independence and real mistakes, but everything still feels new. First flat, first job, first heartbreak, first time staying up until 4am arguing about philosophy.

Choose your campus moment

  • First week: orientation, getting lost, first impressions.
  • Mid-term: deadlines, group projects, the library at 3am.
  • Society life: clubs, sports, theatre, debate.
  • Housing drama: roommates, shared kitchens, landlords.
  • Final year: dissertations, job applications, what comes next.

Roommates and housing

1. The random roommate. Housing assigned you a roommate. They arrived with a cello, three cacti and a strict bedtime.

They set the third cactus on the windowsill. "Lights out at ten. Non-negotiable." "It's freshers' week." "Ten."

2. The flat-share interview. You're interviewing potential flatmates. The best candidate is your ex's best friend.

She sits down across from me with a printed CV. "I know this is weird. But the room's perfect and I'm very good at bins."

3. The kitchen war. Someone in your shared kitchen keeps eating your food and leaving passive-aggressive notes. Today you caught them.

I hold up my labelled yoghurt, half-eaten. "My name is literally on it."

4. The noisy neighbour. The student above you practises drums at midnight. You finally go upstairs.

The door opens. The drummer is wearing headphones and holding a textbook. "Oh. Was it loud? I genuinely can't hear it."

Study and classes

5. The group project. You've been put in a group project with three people who never reply. Except one, who replies at 4am.

A message at 4:07am: "I've done section two. Are you awake? I'm having a crisis about footnotes."

6. The study rival. You and one other student are fighting for the top grade in the hardest module. You've been assigned as lab partners.

She sets her goggles down. "Let's be clear. I'm not sharing my notes." "I didn't ask." "You were going to."

7. The professor's office hours. You're the only student who ever comes to office hours. The professor has started saving you biscuits.

A plate of biscuits is already on the desk when I knock. "Ah, my one loyal student. What's confusing you today?"

8. The library at closing. It's closing time at the library, and you've just realised you're locked in. So is one other person.

The lights click off. Somewhere in the stacks, someone else says, "…Oh no."

Societies and campus life

9. The theatre society. You joined the theatre society to paint sets. They've just cast you as the lead.

"You read the lines while we were testing the lights." The director grabs my shoulders. "You were incredible. You're Hamlet now."

10. The debate final. You're debating against the society's undefeated champion in the final. You've been assigned the side you disagree with.

We shake hands before the round. "Good luck. You'll need it." "I'm arguing that cats are better than dogs. I'll need a miracle."

11. The lost-and-found volunteer. You volunteer at the campus lost-and-found. One student comes in every week to ask about the same thing: a blue notebook.

I set a blue notebook on the counter. "Someone handed this in today. Before I give it to you, I need you to describe something inside it. Rules."

12. The rowing team. You signed up for rowing on a whim. Practice is at 5am, and the cox is terrifying.

The cox glares at me through the morning fog. "You're late. And you're holding the oar backwards."

Late nights

13. The 4am diner. After an all-nighter, you and a classmate end up at the only diner open at 4am.

We slide into a booth. "I've been awake for thirty-one hours." "I've been awake since Tuesday."

14. The fire alarm. The fire alarm went off at 3am. Everyone's outside in pyjamas. You're standing next to the person you've had a crush on all term.

They're wearing dinosaur pyjamas. "Don't say anything." "I love the dinosaurs." "I said don't say anything."

15. The rooftop. You found a way onto the roof of the science building. Someone else found it first.

They're lying on a blanket, looking at the stars. "Shh. It's a secret roof. You can stay if you don't tell anyone."

16. The lost student ID. You find a lost student ID with a sticky note on the back: "If found, I owe you a coffee."

I hand them the ID at the café. "So. About that coffee."

Big moments

17. The study abroad. You've arrived for a semester abroad. Your campus buddy has planned a very ambitious itinerary.

They unfold a hand-drawn map. "Day one. Twelve landmarks. Also lunch. Also a nap, if there's time."

18. The graduation speech. You've been chosen to give the graduation speech. You haven't written it. It's tomorrow.

I spread blank pages across the common room table. "Okay. Help me. What did we actually learn here?"

19. The internship. You both applied for the same internship. You both got it. You're sharing a desk.

"Left side's mine." "There is no left side. It's one desk."

20. The last night in halls. Tomorrow everyone moves out. Tonight you're packing up your room, and your neighbour keeps finding reasons to knock.

Third knock in an hour. "Do you have… tape?" "You asked me that twenty minutes ago." "Right. I'll… keep the tape."

College roleplay tips

  • Use the timetable. Deadlines and exams create natural tension.
  • Make independence matter. First jobs, first budgets, first kitchens.
  • Supporting cast helps. A chaotic flatmate or a stern lecturer adds life.

For younger school settings, see the high school prompts. For darker campus stories, the dark academia prompts. Classic college arcs include forced proximity, as with roommates, and rivals to lovers, as with lab partners.
