Isekai Roleplay Prompts

Summoned heroes, reincarnated villains and ordinary people in another world.

By the Minkplay team · Updated

Twenty original isekai roleplay prompts. Isekai (Japanese for "different world") is the genre where someone from our world ends up in another one: summoned, reincarnated, transported or trapped. Each prompt has a hook and a first message ready to paste. All worlds and characters here are original.

Isekai is perfect for roleplay because your persona can be exactly who you are: confused, out of place, and bringing modern knowledge into a world that has never seen it.

Choose your entry

Isekai stories vary mostly by how you arrive:

  • Summoned: brought on purpose, usually to save someone.
  • Reincarnated: reborn in the new world, often with memories of the old one.
  • Transported: stepped through a door, fell asleep, got hit by something.
  • Trapped in a story: inside a game, book or show you know.

Each comes with different questions. Summoned: why me? Reincarnated: who was I here? Transported: how do I get back? Trapped in a story: what happens if I change the plot?

Summoned

1. The wrong summon. The kingdom performed a ritual to summon a legendary hero. They got you, holding a coffee and a laptop bag.

Forty robed figures stare at me in silence. "…Is this a bad time? I have a meeting at nine."

2. The summoned cook. You were summoned to save the kingdom, not with a sword, but because the royal kitchen has forgotten how to make food taste good.

The king pushes a bowl of grey porridge toward me. "Our prophecy says you can fix this." "Do you have salt?" Gasps around the room.

3. The reluctant hero's assistant. The summoned hero was supposed to arrive alone. You were standing next to them.

"The prophecy mentions one hero." The high priestess looks at me with deep concern. "Who are you?" "Their roommate."

4. The demon lord's summon. You weren't summoned by the kingdom. You were summoned by the demon lord, who needs a human advisor.

The demon lord sits on a throne of black stone, holding a scroll titled "Human Customs (Unclear)." "Explain to me what a 'weekend' is."

Reincarnated

5. The villainess. You've woken up as the villainess in a romance novel you read once. In three months she's executed.

I stare at my reflection: perfect curls, a cruel smile I didn't put there. "Okay. I have ninety days. Who do I need to stop being horrible to first?"

6. The side character. You're reincarnated as a nameless background character who dies in chapter two of a story you know.

I watch the main character walk past the market stall where I die tomorrow. "Excuse me. Can I ask you a strange favour? Could you not leave town tomorrow?"

7. The monster. You've been reborn as a small slime in a dungeon. A low-level adventurer has just found you.

The adventurer raises a stick at me. I wobble. "Please don't. I was an accountant. I can help you with your taxes."

8. The second life. You died in our world and woke up as a child in a noble family, with all your adult memories.

My new "father" is lecturing me about fencing. I'm six. I'm also forty-two. "Respectfully, Father, your stance is wrong."

Transported

9. The door in the library. A door in your university library leads to a world where books are alive. One has followed you back.

A small leather-bound book is hiding behind my laptop, pages trembling. "You followed me. Okay. Do you have a name? Or a title?"

10. The train that didn't stop. You fell asleep on the last train home. It didn't stop at your station. It stopped somewhere else.

The platform sign is in an alphabet I don't recognise. A conductor with fox ears punches my ticket. "First time? Welcome to the end of the line."

11. The fog. You got lost hiking in fog. When it cleared, the mountains were wrong and there were two moons.

I hold up my phone. No signal. A shepherd with silver eyes watches me from the hillside. "Hi. Can you tell me where I am? And why there are two of those?"

12. The swapped lives. You've swapped bodies with a knight from another world. They're in your apartment. You're in their armour.

I'm staring at my own face through a scrying mirror. "Do NOT answer my phone. Do NOT go to my job. And please put a shirt on."

Trapped in a game or story

13. The game world. You logged into a new game. You can't log out. Neither can anyone else.

The tutorial NPC smiles too widely. "Welcome, adventurer! Please choose a class." "Where's the log-out button?" "…Please choose a class."

14. The dating sim. You're trapped inside a dating sim. The only way out is to complete a route. One of the love interests knows it's a game.

She leans against the school gate, staring straight at me. "You're a player, aren't you? I can tell. You have options above your head."

15. The NPC. You've woken up as a shopkeeper NPC in a fantasy game. A player character keeps visiting your shop and noticing you're different.

"You said something different this time." The player leans on my counter. "You always say 'Welcome, traveller.' Today you said 'Oh, it's you again.'"

16. The final boss. You've been transported into a game as its final boss. The heroes are on their way. You're a pacifist.

My minion bows. "Master, the heroes have reached the third floor." "Great. Put the kettle on. I'll talk to them."

Settling in

17. The modern knowledge. Two years in the new world. You've introduced soap, pizza and the concept of a queue. The guilds are not happy.

The head of the Merchant's Guild slams a scroll on my desk. "Your 'pizza' has put three bakeries out of business."

18. The way home. After years in the new world, you've found a way back. Someone here doesn't want you to go.

The portal shimmers. Behind me, someone says my name. "You said you'd stay for the festival." "I know." "The festival is tomorrow."

19. The other one. You thought you were the only person from Earth here. Today you heard someone humming a song from home.

I grab the stranger's sleeve in the market. "That song. Where did you hear that song?"

20. The adventurer's party. You've been reluctantly accepted into an adventurer's party as their "strategist." You have no idea what you're doing.

The party's warrior hands me a map. "You're the strategist. Where do we go?" I turn the map the right way up. "Let's… circle back to that."

Making isekai roleplay work

  • Use your persona's ignorance. Asking how things work is natural worldbuilding.
  • Bring something from home. A skill, an object, a piece of knowledge. Modern ideas in a fantasy world are the genre's best comedy.
  • Decide if you want to go home. It's the genre's central question.

For general fantasy settings, see the fantasy roleplay prompts. For a reluctant hero with a destiny, the chosen one trope. For the demon lord angle, read about demon king characters. And for a structured game-like experience, see solo RPGs with AI.

Characters who'd fit an isekai story

Several anime & fantasy characters work well as the person who finds you on arrival: Priestess Yuna, at whose shrine gates you collapse; Lyanna, guarding the forest border you've just stumbled across; or Demon King Baal, who is the one out of place, summoned into your world by a joke spell.
