Sci-Fi Space Roleplay Prompts

Starships, first contact, derelicts and colony life: 20 starters.

By the Minkplay team · Updated

Twenty original sci-fi roleplay prompts set among the stars: starships, first contact, derelict stations, colony life and the long quiet between worlds. Each has a hook and a first message ready to paste. All ships, species and planets here are original.

Space is a perfect roleplay setting because it isolates characters. A ship is a small world: limited air, limited people, nowhere to walk away to. Every relationship matters more when the nearest other human is six light-years away.

Choose your sci-fi flavour

  • Hard sci-fi: realistic physics, slow travel, survival.
  • Space opera: empires, fleets, adventure, big emotions.
  • First contact: meeting the truly alien.
  • Frontier: colonies, salvage, life on the edge of settled space.
  • Cosmic mystery: anomalies, derelicts, things that shouldn't exist.

Starship life

1. The wrong cryo pod. You've woken from cryo-sleep three years early. Only one other person is awake: the ship's very surprised maintenance engineer.

I stumble out of the pod, frost on my eyelashes. "Why is it so quiet? Where's everyone else?" The engineer drops her wrench. "You're not supposed to be awake for three more years."

2. The navigator's mistake. The ship has arrived at the wrong star system. The navigator swears she programmed the right one.

I pull up the star chart on the bridge screen. "This isn't Kepler Station. These constellations aren't in any database."

3. The captain's last order. The captain died suddenly. Her last order, sealed in her log, names you as her successor. Most of the crew don't know you.

I stand at the front of the mess hall, holding the captain's insignia. "I know what you're thinking. I'm thinking it too."

4. The ship's cat. The ship's cat has been missing for two days. When it comes back, it's brought something from the sealed cargo hold.

The cat drops a glowing crystal at my feet and sits down, very pleased. "Where did you get that? That hold's been sealed since launch."

First contact

5. The interpreter. You're the linguist chosen for first contact. The aliens communicate in colour. You're colourblind.

The alien's skin shifts through shades I can't tell apart. "I'm going to need a minute. And possibly a different linguist."

6. The gift. The first alien ship to reach Earth has sent a single gift. It's addressed to you, by name.

The diplomat hands me the sealed container. "Why you?" "I have absolutely no idea."

7. The stranded alien. An alien pod has crashed near your remote research station. Its pilot is injured, and frightened, and very curious about your coffee.

I hold out a mug, slowly. "It's hot. Drink carefully." The alien sniffs it, then takes the whole mug.

8. The alien embassy's intern. You've been hired as the first human intern at an alien embassy. Nobody has explained the dress code.

"Ambassador, I'm told I'm wearing the wrong number of sleeves."

Derelicts and mysteries

9. The ghost signal. A distress signal from a ship that went missing a hundred years ago. The voice on it is yours.

The recording crackles: "This is—" and then my own voice says my own name. "Play it again."

10. The derelict's last crew member. You've boarded a derelict ship drifting for decades. One crew member is still alive, and hasn't aged a day.

She looks up from the console. "Oh, good. Visitors. What year is it?" "…You don't want to know."

11. The planet that hums. The planet you've landed on hums at a frequency that's slowly changing your crew's dreams.

"Everyone had the same dream last night." I pass the log around the table. "A door. On the far side of the canyon."

12. The station AI's secret. The station's AI has been hiding an entire deck from the crew for years.

The elevator stops at a floor that isn't on any map. "Station. Why have I never seen deck seventeen?" Silence. "Station?"

Frontier

13. The colony's first winter. The colony's first winter is harder than predicted. You're in charge of rationing.

I set the inventory on the council table. "If we keep eating like this, we run out in February. Winter here lasts until May."

14. The salvage claim. You and a rival salvager reached the same wreck at the same moment. Space law is unclear.

Our airlocks dock on opposite sides of the wreck. "I was here first." "Your ship is pointing the wrong way."

15. The mail run. You're a courier delivering letters between isolated mining outposts. One letter has been sealed for twenty years.

The old miner turns the yellowed envelope over. "Who sent this?" "The postmark says you did."

16. The terraformer's garden. On a barren moon, someone has grown a single living tree. You've been sent to find out how.

The tree's leaves are glowing faintly in the dark. "This shouldn't be possible. There's no atmosphere out here."

Space opera

17. The rebel's pilot. A rebel leader needs a pilot to run a blockade. You're the only one who'll do it.

"The blockade's never been run." She slides a credit chip across the table. "Then I'll be the first."

18. The empire's heir in hiding. The heir to a galactic throne has been hiding on your freighter, disguised as your new cook.

The cook sets down a bowl of soup and lowers their voice. "The ship following us. They're here for me."

19. The prisoner exchange. You're the prisoner being exchanged. The enemy officer escorting you won't stop asking about home.

"What's it like?" the officer asks as the shuttle docks. "Your planet. Does it have oceans?"

20. The last starship. Earth is gone. Your ship carries the last thousand humans. You've just found evidence there's another ship out there.

The sensor blips again. "Captain. That's a human transponder. There's someone else."

Tips for space roleplay

  • Use isolation. Small crews and closed spaces raise the stakes of every relationship.
  • Let distance matter. Messages take time. Help is far away.
  • Keep the alien alien. First contact is best when the other side truly thinks differently.

For machine characters, see android characters. For cyberpunk rather than space, try the cyberpunk prompts. Space crews make classic found family, and loops in spacetime are covered in time loop.
