Chai Alternatives

What to compare, and how other platforms differ.

By the Minkplay team · Updated

Note on fairness: Minkplay, which publishes this guide, is a competitor and appears below. Claims about Chai and other apps come from their own sites and app store listings, checked in October 2026. Prices and limits in particular shift often, so please verify them in the app before subscribing.

Chai is a phone-first chatbot app with a large catalogue of user-made AI characters. Its App Store listing shows paid Premium and Ultra plans alongside a free option. Over the past year, the free experience has tightened in some regions, and that's the reason most people give for shopping around.

If message limits are your main frustration, there are two ways to respond: move somewhere with a different model, or get more out of every message wherever you are. This page covers both.

Option 1: Get more from fewer messages

Before you switch, it's worth knowing that limits hurt much less when each message does more work. Compare:

A message that wastes a turn:

"ok what next"

A message that does three turns' worth of work:

I pocket the map and step out of the tavern into the rain. "We go north, tonight, before the guards change shift." I glance back at you. "Unless there's something about the north road you haven't told me."

The second gives the character a location, a plan, a deadline and a question. You'll get a richer reply and skip the back-and-forth that burns messages. The pattern is:

  1. An action that moves the scene.
  2. A decision your character makes.
  3. A hook the other character must answer.

Our guide to writing longer, better replies walks through the technique with a reply rebuilt step by step.

Option 2: Try somewhere else

Phone-first vs. browser

Chai is built for mobile. If you'd rather chat at a desk with a keyboard, which honestly suits longer stories, look for services that work well in a browser. Character.AI and Minkplay both do.

Character.AI

Huge library of user creations; explicit content is against its rules. Under-18s lost access to open-ended chat at the end of November 2025, so younger users should check what's still available to them. It pairs a free plan with a paid upgrade. See Character.AI alternatives.

Talkie and PolyBuzz

Both are large user-generated platforms with creation tools and paid plans: Talkie+ for Talkie, and a tiered membership for PolyBuzz. They're the natural next stop if you mainly want variety. Our pages on Talkie alternatives and PolyBuzz alternatives go into each.

Minkplay

Ours. It's browser-based, free to look around, and strictly safe-for-work. The catalogue is small and hand-made: about 110 originals in eight worlds, every one starting mid-scene so you don't spend messages setting things up. You can also make your own in the Studio.

Honest limits: far fewer characters than Chai, no creator community, and no mobile app experience comparable to a dedicated phone app.

What to compare, in order of importance

  1. What the free plan really allows: number of messages, ads, which model.
  2. What the paid plan adds, and whether you'd actually use it.
  3. Content rules: by design, behind a toggle, or per character.
  4. Where you'll use it: phone or browser.
  5. Privacy: a readable policy and a way to delete your data. See our safety checklist.

Questions people ask before switching

Can I bring my Chai characters with me? Generally there's no direct transfer between apps. But you can rebuild a character: copy out its name, personality notes, scenario and best lines, then recreate it in the new platform's character creator. Writing the personality as specific behaviours (not adjectives) helps it survive the move; our character creation guide shows how.

Is a paid plan worth it anywhere? Only if you'll use what it adds. Try a platform's free tier for a week first, note exactly where you hit a wall, and check whether the paid plan removes that specific wall.

Will a new app feel the same? Probably not at first. Every platform's characters and models write a little differently. Give a new one a few sessions before judging it.
