Character.AI Alternatives

What people want from an alternative, and how other platforms differ.

By the Minkplay team · Updated

Disclosure: this page is published by Minkplay, an AI roleplay platform, so we're one of the alternatives discussed. Facts about other platforms were checked against their own sites, help pages or app store listings in October 2026. Features, prices and policies change often, so confirm on each platform before signing up or paying.

Character.AI is one of the best-known AI character platforms, with a huge library of user-created characters. People look for alternatives for a handful of recurring reasons. The right alternative depends on which reason is yours.

Why people look for an alternative

1. Age rules changed. Character.AI announced it was removing open-ended chat for users under 18, effective no later than November 25, 2025, citing concerns about how open-ended AI chat could affect younger users. Some younger users who relied on that chat are looking elsewhere. Any alternative should be checked for its own age requirements.

2. Content rules. Character.AI's guidelines prohibit sexually explicit content. Some users want fewer restrictions; others actually want firmer guarantees and a platform that's SFW by design.

3. Character quality and consistency. A very large user-made library means variety, but quality varies. Some people prefer smaller, curated libraries.

4. Cost and limits. Character.AI has a free tier and a paid subscription. People compare what each platform's free tier really includes.

5. Wanting something different: different features, a different community, or a fresh start.

Alternatives, by what you're looking for

If you want a very large user-made library

PolyBuzz and Talkie both centre on large libraries of user-created characters with creation tools, which is the closest match to what Character.AI users are used to. Each has its own paid tier and content rules; see PolyBuzz alternatives and Talkie alternatives for how they differ.

If you want fewer content restrictions (adults)

Janitor AI is the platform people most often mention here. Its help centre says NSFW content is disabled by default in its mobile app but available on its website. It isn't an SFW platform, and isn't suitable for anyone looking for SFW-only roleplay; see SFW Janitor AI alternatives.

If you want a mobile-first social app

Chai is a mobile-first chatbot app with free, Premium and Ultra tiers listed in its app store pages. Check its current content settings and terms. More in Chai alternatives.

If you want guaranteed SFW and curated characters

Minkplay (us) is SFW by design: explicit content isn't allowed anywhere, and every character is an original persona, with no real people and no franchise characters. The library is much smaller (around 110 hand-written characters across eight worlds), but each comes with a scenario already in motion, so you start mid-story. There's also a Studio for building your own characters. It's free to browse.

To be clear about what we don't offer: Minkplay doesn't have millions of user-made characters, a large creator community, or long voice calls. If those matter most to you, one of the larger platforms will suit you better.

For parents and younger users

The under-18 change is the reason many families are researching this topic. A few honest points:

  • Every platform sets its own minimum age. Before letting a teenager use any alternative, read that platform's terms. Don't assume an alternative is suitable just because it's popular.
  • "Allows teens" isn't the same as "designed for teens." Look at the content rules, not just the age gate.
  • SFW by design is the safer category. Platforms where explicit content is prohibited everywhere carry less risk than ones where it's hidden behind a setting.
  • Talk about privacy. Whatever the platform, the habits in our safety checklist apply: a made-up persona, no real names, no addresses.

Character.AI's own announcement explained the change as a response to concerns about how open-ended AI chat could affect younger users. That's a reasonable question to ask about any platform a teenager uses.

Before you switch

  • Export or save anything you care about from your old platform, if it allows it.
  • Read the new platform's content rules and privacy policy. Our safety checklist covers what to look for.
  • Check age requirements. They vary between platforms.
  • Try the free tier first. Most platforms have one.
