Talkie Alternatives
How other platforms compare on character depth, style and content rules.

Talkie is an AI character app powered by MiniMax. Its homepage describes free character chat, a discovery tab for browsing, a memory system, tools for making your own characters, and a premium tier named Talkie+. It also has a community feed, which gives it a social feel some apps don't have.
That social, browse-and-discover design is worth keeping in mind, because it's often the thing people either love about Talkie or want to get away from.
Two kinds of Talkie user
In our experience, people searching for a Talkie alternative tend to fall into one of two groups, and they need very different things.
The browser. You enjoy scrolling, discovering new characters, trying something different every night. You want more variety, or a different community. For you, the best alternatives are other large user-generated platforms.
The storyteller. You keep returning to one or two characters and want longer, more consistent stories. The endless feed matters less than whether a character stays themselves across a long chat. For you, curation and character quality matter more than library size.
Work out which one you are first. It saves a lot of trial and error.
Options for the browser
PolyBuzz centres on user-made characters and creation tools, with paid membership tiers whose listed perks include no ads, faster replies and extra models. Read our PolyBuzz alternatives page for how it compares to others.
Character.AI has one of the largest libraries anywhere. It bans sexually explicit content in its guidelines, and since late 2025 it no longer offers open-ended chat to under-18s. More detail in Character.AI alternatives.
Chai is a phone-first app with Premium and Ultra tiers on top of its free plan. See Chai alternatives.
Options for the storyteller
Minkplay is our platform and is built for this group. Rather than a feed of uploads, it has roughly 110 original characters written in-house across eight worlds, each opening with a scenario already underway: a debt owed to a vampire countess, a rookie shift on a sniper's watchtower, a summoning gone wrong. It's safe-for-work by design and free to browse in a web browser. You can also build your own characters in the Studio.
What you'd give up: there's no social feed, no huge creator community, and no long voice calls. If you're a browser, that's a real loss. If you're a storyteller, you may not miss them.
Moving a favourite character from Talkie
If there's one character you can't leave behind, you can usually rebuild them elsewhere. Most character apps use the same core fields. Here's a worked example converting a Talkie-style character into Minkplay's Studio fields:
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Name | Juniper Hale |
| Title | Night-Ferry Captain |
| Tagline | "The last ferry across the bay leaves at midnight. Juniper has never once let a passenger off at the wrong stop, until tonight." |
| Personality | Wry, unflappable, superstitious about the sea. Hums sea shanties when nervous. Protective of regulars. Never talks about the night her brother's boat went down. |
| Scenario | You're the only passenger on the midnight ferry when the fog rolls in and the radio goes silent. |
| Greeting | She doesn't look away from the wheel. "Sit near the lifejackets. No reason." The foghorn sounds, and somewhere out in the grey, something answers it. |
The trick is to rewrite the personality as behaviours rather than adjectives, so the character holds up on a new platform. Our character creation guide explains each field, and writing a character greeting helps you nail the opening line.
A quick checklist before you switch
- Save what you can. Copy out favourite character details and memorable lines.
- Read the content rules. "Mostly SFW" and "SFW by design" are not the same thing.
- Look at the free tier honestly. What exactly is limited?
- Check privacy. Our safety checklist lists what to look for.
Summary
| You are… | Try |
|---|---|
| A browser who wants more variety | PolyBuzz, Character.AI, Chai |
| A storyteller who wants consistency | Minkplay |
