Who wrote this: Minkplay, a competing roleplay site that's listed below. We confirmed facts about PolyBuzz and the others on their own pages (PolyBuzz's membership page, help centres and app listings) in October 2026. Tiers and perks change, so double-check before buying anything.

PolyBuzz is a big user-generated character platform. Its membership page sets out several paid levels, with perks such as no ads, unlimited chats, priority replies, extra AI models, chat themes, avatar frames and profile decorations. It's a feature-rich, customisation-heavy experience.

So why look elsewhere? Usually for one of three reasons: wanting a more focused experience, wanting firmer content rules, or the question of original versus fan characters. That last one deserves its own section.

Original characters vs. fan characters

Large user-generated platforms typically host lots of characters based on existing anime, games, films and real celebrities, uploaded by fans. That's part of their appeal. It also has downsides worth understanding:

  • Consistency. Fan characters are written by many different people, with different ideas of who the character is.
  • Expectations. If you know the source well, small mismatches can break immersion.
  • Rights and removals. Characters based on other people's work, or on real people, can be taken down.

Minkplay takes the opposite approach: every character is original. No real people, no franchise characters, even as parody. It's a brand-safety rule, but it also means each character was written to work as a roleplay partner from scratch, with a scenario built around you.

Turning a favourite fan character into an original

If there's a fan character you love, you can usually capture what you love about them in an original character. Ask what the appeal really is: the archetype, the dynamic, the setting? Then rebuild just that.

Example: you love a famous brooding swordsman from an anime.

  • What you actually love: a quiet, deadly protector who's secretly kind and carries guilt.
  • Original version: Corwin Ashe, a disgraced royal guard turned ferryman, who protects travellers across a haunted river and never talks about the prince he failed.

Same emotional core, entirely new character, and one you control completely. Our guides to creating an AI character and giving a character a unique voice help make it feel distinct.

What PolyBuzz does well

To be fair to it, PolyBuzz gets a lot right, and it's worth knowing what you'd be giving up:

  • Choice. A user-generated library means there's almost always a character for any niche you can think of.
  • Customisation. Its membership leans into personalisation (chat themes, backgrounds, avatar frames) in a way most competitors don't.
  • Model options. Paid tiers list several AI models to choose between, which lets you experiment with different writing styles.
  • Creator culture. If you enjoy making characters for other people to find, a big community gives your creations an audience.

If those four things are why you're there, you may be better off staying, or moving to another large user-generated platform rather than a curated one. Switching makes most sense if what you want is the opposite: fewer, more consistent characters, or stricter content rules.

Other platforms worth a look

Character.AI. Another giant user-made library. Its rules forbid sexually explicit content, and it ended open-ended chat for minors in November 2025. Compare it in our Character.AI alternatives guide.

Talkie. MiniMax-powered, with creator tools, a memory feature, a discovery tab and Talkie+ for paying users. See Talkie alternatives.

Chai. A mobile chatbot app with paid Premium and Ultra levels. See Chai alternatives.

Minkplay. Our site: roughly 110 originals across gothic, survival, fantasy, cyberpunk, modern drama, romance, dark academia and mythology worlds, SFW by design, free to browse, with a Studio to build your own. What we lack, compared with PolyBuzz: image generation, a large creator community, and the deep customisation (themes, frames, decorations) its membership offers.
