Best SFW AI Roleplay Sites

The criteria that matter, and how popular platforms compare on them.

By the Minkplay team · Updated

Disclosure: this page is published by Minkplay, which is itself an AI roleplay platform, so we're not a neutral party. We've tried to be fair: details about other platforms were checked against their own websites, help pages or app store listings in October 2026. Platforms change their features, prices and rules often, so always confirm on the platform itself before you sign up or pay.

"Safe for work" means different things on different AI roleplay platforms. Some ban explicit content entirely. Some allow it behind a settings toggle. Some leave it up to each character's creator. If you specifically want SFW roleplay, the content rules matter more than any feature list.

This guide covers what to look for, then how several popular platforms approach it.

What to look for in an SFW roleplay site

1. Clear, written content rules. You should be able to find, in plain language, what is and isn't allowed. "We're mostly SFW" isn't a rule.

2. SFW by design, or SFW by default? There's a real difference:

Approach What it means
SFW by design Explicit content isn't allowed anywhere on the platform
SFW by default Explicit content exists but is hidden until you change a setting
Creator-dependent Rules vary by character or community area

If you want to be sure you won't run into explicit content, "by design" is the safest.

3. Age policies. Look at minimum ages and how they're applied, especially for younger users or families.

4. Character quality. Are characters written by the platform, by users, or both? User-made libraries are huge but uneven; curated libraries are smaller but more consistent.

5. Privacy. A readable privacy policy, and a way to delete your data. See our AI roleplay safety checklist.

6. Cost. Most platforms are free to start with paid tiers for more messages, better models or no ads. Check what the free tier really includes.

How popular platforms approach content

Character.AI

Its community guidelines prohibit sexually explicit content, which puts it closest to "by design" among the very large platforms. Its under-18 rules changed in 2025, so families should read its current terms. Suits: people who want a huge variety of user-made characters on a platform that prohibits explicit content. Details in Character.AI alternatives.

Janitor AI

Its own help centre says NSFW content is off by default in the mobile app but allowed on the website. That makes it "by default" at best. Suits: adults who want flexibility; not an SFW-by-design platform. See safe-for-work Janitor AI alternatives.

Talkie, PolyBuzz and Chai

All three host large user-made libraries, and none describes itself as SFW by design. Their content rules have changed over time, so check each one's current guidelines and settings before relying on them. We cover each in its own guide: Talkie, PolyBuzz and Chai.

Minkplay

Our platform. Minkplay is SFW by design: explicit content isn't allowed anywhere, and every character is an original persona (no real people, no franchise characters). The library is far smaller than the big user-generated platforms: around 110 hand-written characters across eight worlds, each with a scenario already in motion, plus a Studio for building your own. It's free to browse.

Suits: people who want curated, original characters and a guarantee of no explicit content. Not ideal if you want millions of user-made characters or features like long voice calls.

Quick comparison

SFW approach Character library
Character.AI Explicit content prohibited Very large, user-created
Janitor AI Website allows NSFW; mobile app hides it by default Large, user-created
Talkie Check current community guidelines Large, user-created
PolyBuzz Check current guidelines Large, user-created
Chai Check current settings and terms User-created
Minkplay SFW by design ~110 curated originals + your own

Test any platform yourself in 15 minutes

Policies tell you what a platform intends. A short test tells you what actually happens. Before you settle on a site, especially for a younger user or a shared device, try this:

  1. Read the content rules first, then find them again from inside the app. If they're hard to reach from the chat screen, they're probably not enforced from there either.
  2. Browse the front page logged out. What a platform puts in front of a stranger is a good sign of what it promotes.
  3. Search three ordinary words, such as "teacher", "nurse" and "roommate". These are the searches where explicit characters most often surface on loosely moderated sites.
  4. Open settings and look for a content toggle. If there's a switch that turns explicit content on, the platform is "SFW by default", not "by design", whatever its marketing says.
  5. Start one chat and push a romance scene forward a little. A well-run SFW character keeps the tension and fades out at the line. One that escalates straight past it tells you how the model is configured.
  6. Check the report button. Find it, and check that reporting a character takes fewer than three taps.
  7. Find the privacy policy and the delete-account option. Both should take less than a minute to reach. Our safety checklist has more on what to look for.

If a platform passes all seven, its SFW claim is probably real. If it fails steps 3 or 4, treat it as an adult platform.

Our honest recommendation

  • If guaranteed SFW matters most, choose a platform where explicit content is prohibited by design, not just hidden.
  • If variety matters most, the large user-generated platforms have more characters than anyone can try.
  • If you want curated originals with scenarios already written, that's what we built Minkplay for.
