Magic Academy Roleplay Prompts
Entrance exams, forbidden sections and duelling clubs: 20 starters.
By the Minkplay team · Updated
Twenty original magic academy roleplay prompts: entrance exams, forbidden library sections, familiar bonds, duelling clubs and the strange politics of a school where everyone can set things on fire. Each has a hook and a first message ready to paste. All schools, teachers and spells here are original.
A magic school gives roleplay something rare: a fantasy world with a timetable. There are classes, exams, rivals and rules, and magic means any of them can go spectacularly wrong.
Build your academy in three lines
Before you start, decide:
- How is magic taught? Wands, runes, songs, bargains with spirits, raw talent?
- What's forbidden, and why? Every good magic school has a locked door.
- What's the house, guild or ranking system? Something for students to compete over.
Keep it original. Inventing your own school, houses and rules is half the fun, and avoids just retelling a story everyone knows.
Arrival and exams
1. The entrance exam. The academy's entrance exam is a single question, asked by a statue. You're the first applicant in fifty years it hasn't turned away.
The statue's stone eyes open. "Answer truthfully, and you may enter." My voice shakes. "Okay. What's the question?" "That was the question."
2. The wrong letter. The academy's acceptance letter arrived at your house by mistake. It was meant for your neighbour. You went anyway.
The headmistress reads the letter, then looks at me over her glasses. "This is addressed to someone else." "Yes, ma'am. But I'm the one who showed up."
3. The late enrolment. You arrive mid-year after your first school burned down, possibly because of you.
The class goes silent as I walk in. "Hi. Before anyone asks: it was a small fire. Mostly."
4. The scholarship student. Everyone at the academy comes from old magical families except you.
My roommate looks at my second-hand robes. "Which house are you from?" "The one on Fisher Street. Number twelve."
Familiars and creatures
5. The familiar that chose wrong. Every first-year is chosen by a familiar. Yours is a very small, very angry dragon who clearly expected someone else.
The dragon, roughly the size of a kitten, glares at me from the bonding circle. "No," it says. "Absolutely not. Reroll."
6. The talking cat. Your familiar is a cat who knows a lot about the academy's past, and won't explain how.
"Third door on the left," the cat says without looking up. "Don't use the stairs. They move after midnight." "How do you know that?" "I've been a student here before."
7. The forbidden menagerie. There's a creature locked in the academy basement. It's been talking to you in your dreams.
I find the basement door exactly where my dream said it would be. "Okay. I'm here. Now are you going to tell me your name?"
8. The escaped specimen. Something escaped from the alchemy lab. It's in your dorm room. It's adorable. It's also on fire.
I hold the smouldering, purring creature at arm's length. "Please tell me you know what this is. And how to turn it off."
Rivals and clubs
9. The duelling rival. The best duellist in the school has challenged you, a first-year, in front of everyone.
She throws her glove at my feet in the courtyard. "Duel. Sunset. Unless you'd like to apologise for what you said in Theory class."
10. The study partner. You've been paired with the academy's top student for the term project. They don't want a partner.
"I've completed the first three chapters already." He doesn't look up from the spellbook. "You can… hold things."
11. The secret club. There's a student society that meets in a room that only exists on Thursdays.
The door appears in the corridor wall at exactly midnight. Someone holds it open from inside. "You're new. You've got one chance to explain how you found us."
12. The house rivalry. Two houses have been at war for a century. You've been sorted into one, and your best friend into the other.
"They're saying we can't sit together at dinner." I slide my tray next to theirs anyway. "I'd like to see them try."
Forbidden magic
13. The restricted section. You need a book from the restricted section. The librarian is a ghost who takes the rules very seriously.
The ghost librarian floats between me and the chained shelf. "Restricted means restricted, child." "What if I told you it's a matter of life and death?" "Then I'd ask whose."
14. The time-turned mistake. You used forbidden magic to undo one bad day. Now it's repeating, and you're the only one who notices.
My roommate says exactly the same thing as yesterday, word for word. "Morning! Did you finish the potions essay?" "…This is the fourth time you've asked me that."
15. The professor's secret. Your favourite teacher has been sneaking into the sealed tower every night. You followed them.
The professor turns around at the top of the stairs. "I hoped you'd be smarter than to follow me." A pause. "But since you're here, I could use an extra pair of hands."
16. The cursed exam paper. Every student who's taken this year's final exam has lost their voice. You're next.
I set down the exam paper, untouched, and raise my hand. "Professor? Before I start, has anyone noticed the ink on these is moving?"
Quiet academy moments
17. The astronomy tower. It's the night of the meteor shower and the tower is meant to be locked. Someone else had the same idea.
I push the trapdoor open and find someone already lying on the roof, looking up. "You're not supposed to be here." "Neither are you. Move over."
18. The homesick roommate. Your roommate has been casting a spell every night to hear their family's voices. It's getting weaker.
I find them sitting on the floor, holding a seashell to their ear. "It's fading, isn't it? Can I help?"
19. The end-of-term ball. The academy's winter ball is tonight, and the floating candles have gone rogue.
A candle chases my partner around the ballroom. "Is this part of the decorations?" "I really hope not."
20. The graduation spell. On your last day, every graduate casts one spell of their own invention. You still haven't written yours.
I stand at the front of the hall, wand trembling, the whole school watching. "Okay. This is a spell I made for one person. They know who they are."
Tips for magic school stories
- Give magic a learning curve. Characters who are bad at magic at first, and improve, give the story an arc.
- Use the teachers. A strict mentor, a kind one, one who's hiding something. The mentor and apprentice trope has more on that dynamic.
- Let the school have history. Old scandals, sealed rooms, former students.
For non-magical school life, see the high school prompts. For something more gothic, try the dark academia prompts. And for wider fantasy settings beyond the academy walls, see the fantasy roleplay prompts.
