Safe-for-Work Janitor AI Alternatives
Character roleplay with safe-for-work content rules.

Disclosure: this page is published by Minkplay, an AI roleplay platform and one of the alternatives discussed. Details about other platforms were checked against their own help pages, sites or app store listings in October 2026. Policies change, so always confirm on the platform itself.
Janitor AI is a popular character chat site, known for flexibility: user-made characters, and the option to connect external AI models. It's also known for allowing adult content. According to its own help centre, NSFW content is disabled by default in the mobile app to comply with app store rules, while the website allows it.
That flexibility suits some adults. But many people like the style of character roleplay on sites like Janitor AI and want it without explicit content: for themselves, for a shared device, or simply because they prefer stories built on tension rather than explicitness. This page is for them.
What "safe-for-work alternative" should mean
Not all "SFW" is equal: some platforms prohibit explicit content everywhere, some hide it behind a setting, and some leave it to each character's creator. Only the first gives you a real guarantee. Our SFW roleplay site guide explains the three approaches and how to tell which one a platform uses.
What to keep from the Janitor AI style
People who enjoy character roleplay on flexible platforms usually value:
- Detailed characters with personality, backstory and a scenario.
- Creative freedom: dark themes, villains, drama, romance.
- Character creation: building your own.
A good SFW platform keeps all three. Romance, danger, morally grey characters, gothic horror and slow-burn tension are all perfectly compatible with SFW, as our guide to writing romantic tension without explicit content shows.
Alternatives
Character.AI
A very large platform with user-created characters. Its community guidelines prohibit sexually explicit content. Note that it announced the removal of open-ended chat for users under 18, effective no later than November 25, 2025. More in Character.AI alternatives.
Minkplay
Our platform, and SFW by design: explicit content isn't allowed anywhere, in any setting. Every character is an original persona (no real people, no franchise characters), written with a scenario already in motion. Dark and dramatic themes are welcome: vampire courts, zombie survival, cursed heirs, gods and demons, all without explicit content.
Honest trade-offs: Minkplay's library is small (around 110 hand-written characters across eight worlds) compared with platforms built on millions of user uploads, and it doesn't support connecting your own external AI models. You can build your own characters in the Studio.
Other user-generated platforms
Large user-made libraries such as Talkie and PolyBuzz have their own content rules, which differ and change over time, so read each platform's current guidelines before assuming it's SFW. We cover each in Talkie alternatives and PolyBuzz alternatives.
Bringing a Janitor-style character with you
Most people who switch don't want to lose a character they've built. Janitor AI-style character cards usually have the same handful of fields: a personality, a scenario, a first message and sometimes example dialogue. Those carry over to almost any platform, but a card written for an unrestricted site often leans on explicit hooks that an SFW platform won't run. The fix is to rewrite the source of the tension, not delete it.
Here's a worked example, a moody mercenary card, before and after:
| Field | Original card (leans explicit) | SFW rewrite (same character) |
|---|---|---|
| Personality | "Flirty, possessive, very physical" | "Teasing, protective to a fault, shows interest by standing too close and then pretending he didn't" |
| Scenario | Built around a suggestive situation | "You hired him to get you across the border. Three nights in, the job has stopped feeling like a job." |
| First message | Opens on physical contact | "He tosses you the last ration bar without looking up. Eat. I'm not carrying you over the pass." |
| Example dialogue | Mostly innuendo | Two short exchanges showing how he deflects with sarcasm when someone gets close |
Nothing about who he is changed: he's still guarded, protective and charged. What changed is that the tension now comes from what he won't say, which is something an AI can play for a hundred messages without the story running out. If you want to go further, our guides to creating an AI character and writing a character greeting walk through each field.
A few porting habits that save time:
- Rewrite adjectives as behaviours. "Possessive" becomes "checks the exits whenever you're in a room together". Behaviours survive any content rule.
- Keep the scenario in motion. A card that starts mid-situation works on every platform; one that starts with a description doesn't.
- Drop example dialogue that only exists for one kind of scene. It pulls every conversation back toward that scene.
A note on external model connections
Part of Janitor AI's appeal for some users is connecting external AI services through their own API keys. If you do this anywhere, remember that your conversations then also pass through that external service, under its own terms and privacy policy. It's worth reading both. Our safety checklist covers the basics.
Getting the same depth in SFW
If you're moving from a flexible platform to an SFW one, a few techniques keep stories intense:
- Build tension through restraint: proximity, interruption, the almost-moment.
- Use dark themes freely: curses, villains, grief and danger are all SFW.
- Fade to black when a scene needs it, then pick up the story after.
Our guide to what SFW AI chat means explains exactly where the lines are, and tropes like slow burn and enemies to lovers show how much drama fits inside them.
